Putting Arts in the Picture

“Putting Arts in the Picture: Reframing education in the 21st century”

Chapter 2, “No One Learns Alone” was especially poignant for me, with its emphasis on the distinction of the process of arts integration versus the role arts experiences play in a students learning experience, which typically are not rooted in a deeper connection to the students’ curriculum. It is imperative to find the connections, and there are so many possibilities—thousands of connections waiting to be discovered and validated within the classroom and curriculums. “Dull routines of schooling …leave students intellectually unchallenged and emotionally disengaged”(50). By embedding these key elements of successful arts integrated education and allowing them to develop within schools, this book really provides evidence that these kinds of educational policies and curricula are available and within reach of any teacher who takes the time to apply themselves to the task at hand. The examples in this chapter especially ring true without the text.
