Week 3
It is somewhat comforting to know that every thought I am realizing while reading this book has been thought of before! “the how and why of doing work” was extremely powerful for me as both a teacher and a student. The idea of teaching kids to excel and trusting they understand big ideas and abstract concepts coincides perfectly with what I have been striving for my entire life. There are too many dance teachers who might has well be babysitters for the amount of technique and discipline they instill in their students through their classes, and that could not be farther from where I plan to go in the education field. Teaching students to create like professional artists as this article mentions is vital to the students actually understanding why people become artists or practice the arts at all. By not wasting the students time in the studio by teaching fundamental basics from the beginning, the students don’t later have to re-learn each task at a higher level, they can instead refine a process they are already familiar with and have already grasped important wisdom from, which keeps them coming back to the studio.
